The uMoya Origin Story

uMoya is a Zulu word that means breath, life force, and spirit. It also embodies our vision for 'excellence in human care'.
Why Cape Town
First some context.
Much knowledge can be gained from studying the finest recovery centres in the world. They are efficient. They are professional. They are well run. Medical led. Most are in the Northern Hemisphere. We have taken the best elements of their approaches. We went south and have introduced warmth of the African continent and its people.
The Location
We chose Cape Town for uMoya because this place embodies the spirit of uMoya.
Cape Town has all the natural elements going for it. Table Mountain brings the earth energy. The cold Antarctic waters brings the water energy. Camps Bay's stunning sunsets brings the fire energy. The air element is clean.
Cape Town is an energetically strong point on earth.
The People of Cape Town
Capetownians are warm, heart-centric people. We have established a team of experts who are among the best in their fields. They resonate the uMoya feeling.
Our Vision and Answer
How do we fulfil our vision of excellence in human care?
The answer is uMoya Cape Town
The Team Behind uMoya
We are students of the science of Self. Two based in Cape Town. Two in Zurich. We have been friends for decades. Over 200 years of solid friendship and trust. And we chose to build uMoya together.
Our Origins
Our story comes from resilience. Indian workers were brought to South Africa to work the sugarcane fields of Durban before us. They built lives and community. We grew up in KwaZulu-Natal, the kingdom of the Zulu. Through the apartheid system and the Group Areas Act, we lived as an Indian community within the heart of Zululand.
uMoya and Om
It is our suspicion that uMoya is possibly the Zulu equivalent of Om. It is the Zulu pronunciation of the ancient Sanskrit sound.
Om is the fundamental sound. It is vibration itself. Om is also defined as breath, life force and spirit. Pranava. The didgeridoo speaks it. Himalayan throat singing speaks it. uMoya. Om. Different languages. Same meaning. One vibration.
This was our realisation. This is uMoya.

The Logo
The uMoya logo combines an African elephant with the Om symbol. It is who we are.
The African elephant represents the continent that shaped us. It carries the wisdom and resilience of the African spirit. It carries the elephant headed being, Ganesha, from our Indian roots. Ganesha represents the inner child and is the remover of obstacles. The first step in all healing. And Om is the Sanskrit equivalent to uMoya.
uMoya = Breath = Life Force = Spirit = Om
The elephant and Om merge into one. Into uMoya.
Why This Matters to Us
The logo is our story. It shows who we are. A unique anomaly of an identity from our colorful history. This is why uMoya matters. It is who we are. We could not have created uMoya any other way.
